Destinations: Yampa River Canoeing

Canoe the “Little Yampa Canyon,” a remote, meandering 32-mile segment of the Yampa River in NW Colorado near Steamboat Springs and Craig, CO. This Colorado river is suitable for beginners and twists its way through lush open meadows lined with cottonwood trees and rocky bluffs. With almost no roads or signs of civilization, wildlife is abundant. Watch for deer, elk, antelope, coyotes, hawks, and bald and golden eagles. You’ll paddle through an area with an interesting geologic and human history: it was once the domain of the ancient Fremont people and later the Ute Indians until they were moved to Utah after the Meeker massacre in 1879. The area also served as a hideout for numerous outlaws including Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch!
